United States Marines, for more than two centuries, have been among the world's fiercest and most admired of warriors. They have fought from the Revolutionary War to Afghanistan and Iraq, in famous battles become bone and sinew of American lore. But why do Marines fight? Why fight so well? Why run toward the guns? Now comes a thrilling new book, pounding and magnificent in scope, by the author some Marines consider the unofficial "poet laureate" of their Corps. James Brady interviews combat Marines from wars ranging from World War II to Afghanistan, their replies in their own individual voices unique and powerful, an authentically American story of a country at war, as seen through the eyes of its warriors. Culling his own correspondence and comradeship with hundreds of fellow Marines, Brady compiles a story---lyrical and historical---of the motivations and emotions behind this compelling question. Included are the accounts of Senator James Webb and his lance corporal son, Jim; New York City police commissioner Ray Kelly; Yankee second baseman (and Marine fighter pilot) Jerry Coleman, and of teachers, firemen, authors, cops, Harvard football players, and just plain grunts, as well as the unforgettable story of Jack Rowe, who lost an eye and other parts and now grows avocados and chases rattlesnakes. Their stories poignantly and profoundly illustrate the lives and legacies of battlefront Marines. Why Marines Fight is a ruthlessly candid book about professional killers not ashamed to recall their doubts as well as exult in their savagely triumphant battle cries. A book of weight and heft that Marines, and Americans everywhere, will want to read, and may find impossible to forget. Praise for James Brady The Scariest Place in the World "[A] graceful, even elegant, and always eloquent tribute to men at arms in a war that, in a way, never ended." ---Kirkus Reviews "James Brady has done it again. A riveting and illuminating insight into a dark corner of the world." ---Tim Russert, NBC's Meet the Press The Coldest War "His story reads like a novel, but it is war reporting at its best---a graphic depiction, in all its horrors, of the war we've almost forgotten." ---Walter Cronkite "A marvelous memoir. A sensitive and superbly written narrative that eventually explodes off the pages like a grenade in the gut . . .taut, tight, and telling." ---Dan Rather The Marine "In The Marine, James Brady again gives us a novel in which history is a leading character, sharing the stage in this case with a man as surely born to be a gallant warrior as any knight in sixth-century Camelot." ---Kurt Vonnegut The Marines of Autumn "Mr. Brady knows war, the smell and the feel of it." ---The New York Times

Lieutenant Straughan Downing Kelsey, Jr. was my only and older brother. He was the family's Protector. When he was Killed In Action, June 2, 1967 in Quang Tin Province, Vietnam the family died with him. My younger sister and I survive. We are all that is left of a once glorious family. I wish that the gifts the Lord blessed him with will not be forgotten nor his courage, valor and compassion. He was a gifted athlete, artist, musician and intellect. He graduated from Princeton University in June of 1965 and entered the Marine Corps almost immediately. It was his lifelong dream. This book is his story and legacy. It is the story of the times he lived in when America went from watching Howdy Doody to civil rights race riots and war at home and Vietnam. America lost her innocence but Stevie never wavered in his devotion to his country and the Marine Corps. Press Release : My Brother Stevie: A Marine’s Untold Story: Vietnam 1967 By Marianne Kelsey Orestis In recognition of her book, My Brother Stevie: A Marine’s Untold Story: Vietnam 1967 and tireless work in promoting patriotism while honoring the sacrifice and service of all Veterans and their families, The Department of Defense recently awarded Authorhouse author, Marianne Kelsey Orestis, the prestigious Vietnam War Commemoration Award. Anything is pretty much possible if you dream it, you can have it. That is, unless war is a factor. This is a narrative, true story of a young girl who grew up in a poor, dysfunctional family in Upstate New York, and lives mostly in a dream world as a means to escape her mundane life. Probably not such a unique story. But she is unique in that she does something about it she doesnt wait for things to happen, or anyone else to be in control of her destiny --she takes the reins. Through enthusiasm and guts, she manages to live the life shes always dreamed about -- to travel, to see the world. Its 1967 and at the inexperienced age of 20, she leaves her home in New York to work in Great Britain as a domestic, where she stays for nearly two years. She gets there on a one-way ticket, working papers, $100, and the determination to see what the real Europe is like -- not through the eyes of a tourist who only visits for a couple of weeks. She comes out of this experience not only with an education that she otherwise never would have had, but some great stories shell be able to pass on to family and friends. But before she leaves on her adventure of a lifetime, she becomes a friend and lover to Peter. He is her first real love and memories of our first usually remain forever. This was no different for Marlene, and she chronicles the way her and Peter kept in touch in 1967 and 1968 with their letters. And after experiencing some great highs during her two years abroad, she returns home with a heavy heart, as Peter has become a casualty of the Vietnam War the day the letters stopped. A starry-eyed, adventurous young girl, still rather nave when she left home, returns having aged a lot more than she bargained for. In the end however, she would come to realize that certain people enter your life for a reason. She was lucky enough to let Peter into hers, as he has been such a positive influence for over 40 years. This book contains the actual letters Peter wrote to Marlene and her recollections of what she wrote back to him, with no embellishments. Although the book deals with the Vietnam Era, anyone who has friends or relatives serving in the military today will relate to the story.
