"Excellent, entertaining, and extremely well written I couldn't stop reading!"-Phil Hellmuth, poker icon and author of Play Poker Like the Pros Forget Wall Street-America's best and brightest now seek their fortunes at the poker tables. Broke: A Poker Novel follows the lives of three talented, young poker players as they chase fame and fortune in a world fraught with addiction. Raf Verheij is a twenty-five-year-old match prodigy who likes to think that his current situation is unique: poker pulled him out of a deep hole instead of leading him into one. Robert Thompson is a player who has an almost supernatural ability-reading opponents' hands by taking cues from their body language-and a huge gambling problem. And finally, there's Matt Ingram, a grinder with a penchant for all things self-destructive. It's a world where the individual has to worry less about the problems that others will cause him than the problems that he will cause for himself. Broke looks into the lives of Raf, Robert, and Matt in their high-stakes quest for gaining poker legend status and reveals just how addictive and dangerous the world of poker can be to one's bankroll and mental health.

American universities are facing a crisis of growing magnitude. Sharply rising tuition fees have led to a rising chorus of complaints - and serious questions about the future of higher education in this country. Are tuition increases that rapidly outpace the rate of inflation pushing higher education out of reach for more and more people? Is this cost explosion a recent phenomenon? What are we getting in return for these higher tuition fees? In Going Broke by Degree, economist Richard Kent Vedder explains why costs are rising so fast and what can be done about it. He compares the underlying causes for the higher education's cost problem to that of the health care crisis. Third parties, especially governments, pay a large share of the bills for university education. The ordinary constraints on raising prices in a competitive, for-profit market environment are weak in the higher education market. The adverse consequences of inefficiency are largely absent. have become bloated. Faculties and staff have seen their compensation rising sharply in modern times. New technology is not used aggressively to reduce labor costs. Universities aggressively seek payments beyond the amount needed to provide goods and services. Price discrimination in the form of scholarships has facilitated the cost explosion as well. Vedder demonstrates that even so-called noneconomic issues - grade inflation, affirmative action problems, declining free discourse, political correctness, and the corruption of intercollegiate athletics - have a strong economic base. Vedder notes indications that changes are on the horizon. Already, non-traditional alternatives - such as for-profit universities, computer-based distance learning, and non-university certification of skills - provide some of the same essential services as universities. As universities become more tuition-driven, many of their inefficiencies will be squeezed out of the system as they struggle to survive. tenure, increasing teaching loads, paring administrative staffs, slashing costly low-enrollment programs, increasing distance learning, addressing high student attrition rates, contracting out more services, cutting costly noneducational programs of dubious worth, and altering affirmative action. Vedder suggests even more dramatic and fundamental changes, including moving to a student-based funding model (voucherization) and even privatization of state universities.

"Broke was not in the cards for me. . . . Girls—then women—like us stay strong through it all. A little (or big) financial setback doesn t break us. Or our connection to God." And yet, God let Caryn Rivadeneira and her family go dead broke. In the midst of this financial and spiritual desert, Caryn questioned God's goodness, wondering how he could feel so far away. Doesn't God promise blessing to those who serve him? Doesn't he hear his faithful followers' cries for provision and help? Join in Caryn's journey as she pursues God even when bruised, battered and broken by life. You'll laugh and cry with her as she experiences spiritual blessing and discovers God's goodness in ways she never expected. "We survived. I kept breathing. I kept stepping. And somewhere in the cracks, along the ragged edges of my marriage, in the desperate gasps of sudden poverty and all the questions that came with it, there was God. Big and glittering, soft and warm, smiling and beckoning. Somehow in the shimmers of all that, I began to taste and see, and feel and know, and hear and smell that God is good, and he was there in the broke bits." "In this time of longing to know what God was up to and to experience his goodness and presence, God worked me over by showing me where and how I could find him. Which is all over the place. In every last thing. He satisfied my wonderlust—my unquenchable desire to feel his presence and to experience his glory. And I found him. And I found him good."
