This volume is timely in that it explores key issues which are currently at the forefront of the EU's relations with its eastern neighbours. It considers the impact of a more assertive Russia, the significance of Turkey, the limitations of the Eastern Partnership with Belarus and Moldova, the position of a Ukraine in crisis and pulled between Russia and the EU, security and democracy in the South Caucasus. It looks at the contested nature of European identity in areas such as the Balkans. In addition it looks at ways in which the EU's interests and values can be tested in sectors such as trade and migration. The interplay between values, identity and interests and their effect on the interpretation of europeanisation between the EU and its neighbours is a core theme of the volume.

With its strategic location of the existing power lines and economic potential, Ukraine, as one of the most important countries of Eastern Europe, is one of the pilot countries with which Turkey aims to develop its relations in an ‘exemplary manner’. Besides, since Ankara and Kiev, share common values and priorities within the framework of preserving stability in the region, the Black Sea neighborhood adds another dimension to bilateral relations. With the High-Level Strategic Council founded in May 2010, it is aimed to improve political and economic relations. Moreover with visa exemption agreement, which is going to be signed in December 2011, will not only increase tourism activities but also expected to intensify the mutual inter-communal relations. Even though there is a consensus on accelerating existing relations in which high level visits frequently occur, the effective potential is not available yet due to differences in political agendas. This has both structural and cyclical reasons. In this study, before proceeding to the analysis of Turkey-Ukraine relations, Ukraine’s economic structure and political process is going to be evaluated in a comprehensive way, for better understanding of the Ukraine politics as well as bilateral relations.

The area directly bordering the Russian Federation and the growing European UnionUkraine, Belarus and Moldovaraises new problems for the EU. For the first time in its history, the EU must form neighborly relations with bordering states that can neither be isolated nor completely integrated due to their basic systemic differences. The eastern enlargement of NATO is a key factor in the redesign of Europe's security architecture. This solution, however, focuses on the risks of a tighter military definition of security. By contrast, the increasing threats arising from political, economic and social conflicts (the so-called soft security risks) are not sufficiently taken into account. Integration in terms of security policy is the core of good relations between the EU and its future eastern neighbors. The agenda of direct neighborhoods for Central and Eastern Europe as well as the agenda of stabilization for Southeastern Europe are dealt with through empirical analysis and the formulation of policy recommendations in this collection of essays.

The vitality and progress of Ukraine is fundamental to peace and progress in Europe. Consequently, friends of Ukraine are eager to offer praise for the countrys many accomplishments to date, as well as suggestions for continued progress. This timely report must be the forerunner of ongoing and generous assistance to that nation.Richard G. Lugar, U.S. Senate Foreign Relation Committee The Ukrainian people and their government have accomplished much since regaining independence in 1991in terms of political and economic reform and in building constructive foreign relations with the West and Russia. The record is impressive, perhaps the most impressive of any state to have emerged from the defunct Soviet Union, with the exception of the Baltic nations. There have also, however, been many shortfalls and setbacks: an inability to reach political compromises; pervasive corruption; lack of a generally accepted constitutional framework; and government intervention in markets, impeding progress toward a market economy. This report, commissioned by the U.S.-EU Partnership Committee for Ukraine, provides a net assessment of Ukraines achievements and shortcomings over the last 16 years. The report examines developments in the areas of governance, economics, energy, the military, and international relations. And it offers a series of priority recommendations for Ukraineas well as for the European Union and the United Statesin order to continue progress in those areas.

Diploma Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Economics - International Economic Relations, grade: 1,3, University of Leipzig, language: English, abstract: The Association Agreement, which was signed between the European Union and Ukraine in 2014, opened a big discussion about new challenges in Europe. Many European countries signed similar Agreements and became very quickly therafter full members of the EU. Nowadays there are a lot of opinions and myths about what exactly the Ukrainian Association is, and, in general, where it should bring Ukraine and Europe. This research paper explores the objectives pursued by the EU and Ukraine by the time they signed the Agreement. It provides a full analysis and interpretation of its content and describes how Ukrainian attempt to get closer to the European Union changed the geo-political situation in Europe. This paper is important as it will cast in light the background of the present tragical events in Ukraine and will provide deeper knowledge about the situation. The main hypotheses of this work are as follows: 1. The Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU does not give any guarantees for the accession to the EU and could only be seen as the basis of a prospective future membership. 2. The access to the European integration of Ukraine in the EaP is precluded because of inflexible and “naive” policy of the EU. The ENP has failed and needs to be reconsidered. 3. Russian permanent intervention in the policy decision-making of Ukraine slowdowns its integration towards Western Europe. The paper will be a mixture of description and “data followed by analysis”, going gradually more in depth from the negotiation process to the conclusion of the AA between Ukraine and the EU. To make the argument easy to follow, chronological analysis will be used in dealing with the interval of 2007-2015 (from the beginning of negotiations to the implementation process of the AA).
