Christine Hartmann's mother valued control above all else, yet one event appeared beyond her command: the timing of her own death. Not to be denied there either, two decades in advance Irmgard Hartmann chose the date on which to end her life. And her next step was to tell her daughter all about it. For twenty years, Irmgard maintained an unwavering goal, to commit suicide at age seventy. She managed her chronic hypertension, stayed healthy and active, and lived life to the fullest. Meanwhile, Christine fought desperately against the decision. When Irmgard wouldn't listen, the only way to remain part of her life was for Christine to swallow her mother's plans--hook, line, and sinker. Christine's father, as it turned out, prepared too slowly for old age. Before he had made any decision, fate disabled him through a series of strokes. Confined to a nursing home, severely impaired by dementia and frustrated by his circumstances, his life epitomized the predicament her mother wanted to avoid. So Far Away gives us an intimate view of a person interacting with and reacting to her parents at the ends of their lives. In a richly detailed, poignant story of family members' separate yet interwoven journeys, it underscores the complexities and opportunities that life presents each one of us.

Preserving Privacy in Data Outsourcing

Privacy requirements have an increasing impact on the realization of modern applications. Commercial and legal regulations demand that privacy guarantees be provided whenever sensitive information is stored, processed, or communicated to external parties. Current approaches encrypt sensitive data, thus reducing query execution efficiency and preventing selective information release. Preserving Privacy in Data Outsourcing presents a comprehensive approach for protecting highly sensitive information when it is stored on systems that are not under the data owner's control. The approach illustrated combines access control and encryption, enforcing access control via structured encryption. This solution, coupled with efficient algorithms for key derivation and distribution, provides efficient and secure authorization management on outsourced data, allowing the data owner to outsource not only the data but the security policy itself. To reduce the amount of data to be encrypted the book also investigates data fragmentation as a possible way to protect privacy of data associations and provide fragmentation as a complementary means for protecting privacy: associations broken by fragmentation will be visible only to users authorized (by knowing the proper key) to join fragments. The book finally investigates the problem of executing queries over possible data distributed at different servers and which must be controlled to ensure sensitive information and sensitive associations be visible only to parties authorized for that. Case Studies are provided throughout the book. Privacy, data mining, data protection, data outsourcing, electronic commerce, machine learning professionals and others working in these related fields will find this book a valuable asset, as well as primary associations such as ACM, IEEE and Management Science. This book is also suitable for advanced level students and researchers concentrating on computer science as a secondary text or reference book.

Vulnerability Churches and HIV

The HIV pandemic has caused serious challenges for the Church as well as for theology. The pandemic has brought enormous human suffering to individuals and has affected families and entire societies. In this context, churches need to listen and to learn, and not least to respond, to thereby mold their own actions and futures. In so doing, this book aims to enable churches to become more HIV and AIDS competent. Vulnerability, Churches, and HIV includes two kinds of contributions. First, researchers present their thoughts about theology, the church, and HIV. A pastoral letter from the bishops of the Church of Sweden provides a second perspective. The letter makes recommendations to decision-making bodies, patent holders, and decision makers in the pharmaceutical industry. The letter also guides parishes and church workers. Contributors include editor Goran Gunner, Musa W. Dube, Susanne Rappmann, Kenneth R. Overberg, Edwina Ward, and the bishops of the Church of Sweden. The book is the first volume in the Church of Sweden Research Series.

Long-listed for the 2014 MsLexia International Memoir Competition, MsLexia described this memoir as "among the 80 most compelling and accomplished memoirs submitted." In the summer of 1992 with an opportunity to visit a region of the world I loved, to do work that I loved, how could I refuse? But I failed to update myself on the security situation and found myself travelling into Kabul Afghanistan when most others were fleeing. These are my memories of that dangerous time. There are scary escapes, ups and downs, successes and failures, while the voices of home, family and childhood speak to me from England to the East. "Eileen witnessed some of the worst days of Afghanistan's deadly factional conflict and not only survived but assisted thousands of Afghans whose lives had been turned upside down" - Michael Semple. "PRAYER FOR AN INFIDEL is as we have in our Persian language, called 'Safar Nama' means journey letters, wherein the writer records the events of an age for future generations" - Ahmad Zia Langari.
