Although the topic meant to inspire kids, seriousness is eased with Willink’s sense of humor and with Bozak’s hilarious comic-style illustrations." —Children's Literature Praise for the audiobook: "Narrator Thor Willink, the author's son, sounds just about Marc's age, and his dad voices the adults. An updated edition of the blockbuster bestselling leadership book that took America and the world by storm, two U.S. Navy SEAL officers who led the most highly decorated special operations unit of the Iraq War demonstrate how to apply powerful leadership principles from the battlefield to business and life. Sent to the most violent battlefield in Iraq, Jocko Willink and Leif Babin’s SEAL task unit faced a seemingly impossible mission: help U.S. forces secure Ramadi, a city deemed “all but lost.” In gripping firsthand accounts of heroism, tragic loss, and hard-won victories in SEAL Team Three’s Task Unit Bruiser, they learned that leadership—at every level—is the most important factor in whether a team succeeds or fails. Willink and Babin returned home from deployment and instituted SEAL leadership training that helped forge the next generation of SEAL leaders. After departing the SEAL Teams, they launched Echelon Front, a company that teaches these same leadership principles to businesses and organizations. From promising startups to Fortune 500 companies, Babin and Willink have helped scores of clients across a broad range of industries build their own high-performance teams and dominate their battlefields. Now, detailing the mind-set and principles that enable SEAL units to accomplish the most difficult missions in combat, Extreme Ownership shows how to apply them to any team, family or organization. Each chapter focuses on a specific topic such as Cover and Move, Decentralized Command, and Leading Up the Chain, explaining what they are, why they are important, and how to implement them in any leadership environment. A compelling narrative with powerful instruction and direct application, Extreme Ownership revolutionizes business management and challenges leaders everywhere to fulfill their ultimate purpose: lead and win.

The importance of balance as a leader by the #1 New York Times bestselling authors of Extreme Ownership. Every leader must be ready and willing to take charge, to make hard, crucial calls for the good of the team and the mission. Something much more difficult to understand is that, in order to be a good leader, one must also be a good follower. This is a dichotomy; a Dichotomy of Leadership. It is, as authors Jocko Willink and Leif Babin wrote in their bestselling first book Extreme Ownership, “Simple, Not Easy.” Now, in The Dichotomy of Leadership, the authors explain the power inherent in the recognition of the fine line that leaders must walk, balancing between two seemingly opposite inclinations. It is with the knowledge and understanding of this balance that a leader can most effectively lead, accomplish the mission and achieve the goal of every leader and every team: Victory. Using examples from the authors' combat and training experience in the SEAL Teams and then showing how each lesson applies to business and in life, Willink and Babin reveal how the use of seemingly opposite principles—leading and following, focusing and detaching, being both aggressive and prudent—require skill, awareness, understanding and dexterity; all attributes that can be honed. These dichotomies are inherent in many of the concepts introduced in Extreme Ownership, and integral to their proper implementation and effectiveness. Dichotomy is essential reading for anyone looking to lead and win.

In 1882, Jigoro Kana (1860-1938) founded Kodokan Judo at Eishoji Temple in Tokyo. It was the culmination of a lifelong devotion to the jujutsu of the past, which he reorganized while at the same time taking great care to retain its classical traditions. As Kano explains in Kokokan Judo, as a youth he studied jujutsu, a martial art practiced in Japan since feudal times, which involved throwing, hitting, kicking, stabbing, slashing, choking, bending and twisting limbs - and the defenses against these attacks. After years of studying many different jujutsu techniques, he realized that although many different techniques were taught, there was no one core value holding them together. After thorough consideration, Kano was able to identify an all-pervasive principle: to make the most efficient use of mental and physical energy. He then looked at the different techniques again, and chose only those in which this principle was correctly applied. This was judo. "Ju" means gentleness or giving way. "Do" means principle or way. Judo, therefore, is the Way of gentleness, which implies that first giving way leads to ultimate victory. The Kodokan is literally "the school for studying the Way." This book is a collection of Kano's essential teachings, selected and compiled from his wealth of writings and lectures spanning a period of fifty-one years. Throughout his life, Kano emphasized the importance of understanding the correct meaning of judo and putting it into practice. According to its founder, judo is the way by which we make the best use of our mental and physical energy - by using that energy for the good of society. According to this definition, judo, which once would have been a martial art - a fighting skill used to defend against an attack - became a richer, more complex and universal art, which in turn, evolved into a principle that can be applied to all aspects of human life.
