This handbook shows how to solve the main process-related problems that crop up often in chemical engineering practice. The book, now in its third edition, is an outgrowth of the highly successful Standard Handbook of Engineering Calculations, which contains separate sections devoted to the various engineering disciplines, including a relatively short section on chemical engineering. The desirability of publishing a similar handbook that focused exclusively on chemical engineering was obvious. Tyler Hicks, editor of the previously mentioned volume, was co-editor of the first edition, which helped to assure continuity in employing the well-accepted approach that the Standard Handbook features. The approach consists of the use of solved, numerical illustrative examples. Except for introductory paragraphs in a few of the chapters where introduction seemed especially appropriate, this entire volume consists of solved examples. In each chapter, these have been chosen so as to bring out the most important problems that arise in the topic covered by that chapter (excepting those problems that are too complex and unwieldly for this approach). In somework situations, readers will use the solution techniques directly, with a calculator; in other cases, the examples will provide the understanding that is needed for implementing a computer-based solution. The main changes in this third edition are the addition of three new chapters, on biotechnology, cost engineering, and water-pollution control. The biotechnology and cost engineering chapters were written explicitly for this handbook; the chapter on water-pollution control is based upon relevant examples from the authoritative handbook, Wastewater Engineering, by Metcalf and Eddy, published by McGraw-Hill.
