Did you realize the book of Psalms is full of God's promises and messages for life today? Have you ever considered that these messages and promises are for you? "Heart Songs: Reflections from the Book of Psalms" is one Christian's personal meditation and joyful response to these age-old scriptures that bring comfort, reassurance, and hope. Each reflection is a heart-to-heart talk with God in which the author acknowledges God's promises and responds in gratefulness. By offering insights and drawing connections to other Bible passages, the author helps readers see the power of these scriptures to affect their daily lives. God does not want to be distant. He wants to be known personally by each of us. And His promises are true for all who believe and trust in Him. "Heart Songs" beckons readers to open up their hearts to these truths and to claim God's promises for their own.

The stories of our lives are a lot like songs—beautiful, eternal melodies composed by our loving God. In Heart Songs, author Kathryn Slattery shares some of these songs through her own life stories, seeking to provide hope, encouragement, and inspiration. In this collection, she explores the joys and challenges of life’s changing seasons—being a young mother; being a member of the “Sandwich Generation” pressed on both sides to meet the needs of her aging mother while also caring for her husband and children; being an empty nester and losing her mother; and being a joyful mother of the bride. Throughout her life’s journey, Slattery discovers fresh, helpful, spiritual insights—“heart songs”—that she shares as a mother, daughter, sister, wife, and friend. With refreshing candor and gentle, self-effacing humor, Heart Songs captures those divine and fleeting moments when heaven’s music breaks through and our hearts sing in perfect harmony with our loving God. Praise for Heart Songs “Kitty Slattery writes not just for the heart but for the soul. She reaches deep into her own life as well as the lives of others to find the stories that lift us up and give us the greatest gift any writer can give—hope.” —Edward Grinnan, editor-in-chief of Guideposts magazine and author of The Promise of Hope “Heart Songs is full of heart-tugging warmth and wisdom, a chance to savor the wonder of a life well-lived.” —Rick Hamlin, executive editor of Guideposts magazine

My chosen name is Balticbard. I am an artist, writer, and poet. This is my book of poems: Heartsongs. From a very young age, I lived within myself; in a magical world of my own making. I filled my magic world with stories of Edgar Allen Poe, 19th century romantic poetry, Greek myth, horror movies, Arthurian legends, bible stories, sitcoms from the sixties, pre-Raphealite painting, surrealism, Jesus Christ, music from the sixties, and old stories, and legends from the old country that my mother, and grandmother told me as I was growing up. In time I encountered the greatest blessing that my wondrous God has given me; the pagans. It was the pagan source that helped me unlock the door to my world of magic, which I had thought lost to me. I finally found my inner source, and my words of magic came forth in my poetry. So finally I say thanks to my God, and to all my pagan friends for my inspiration. -Balticbard

Heart Songs: The Collected Poems of Nina Serrano, 1969-1980, was first published by Editorial Pocho Che, a Latino literary collective, as part of a three-book 10th anniversary series. The other two books were Raul Salinas’ now classic Un Trip through the Mind Jail y Otras Excursions and Roberto Vargas’s legendary Nicaragua Yo To Canto Besos Balas y Suenos de Libertad. Estuary Press republished it as an ebook. In those times, I was raising a family, supporting a revolution in Nicaragua and seeing its triumph, supporting the anti-Vietnam war movement, defending minority rights, as the minorities were swelling in California to today’s majority, fighting for women’s rights and our place in the sun, going through a martial break-up, and being a single woman again.
