Major Kevin Balisky was the assistant operations officer for the 130th Engineer Brigade, deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from March through October 2003. In this interview, he discusses his role and thoughts concerning engineer operations from the brigade staff perspective. He also provides a unique perspective as a staff officer during major combat operations as well as Phase IV stability operations. Balisky discusses his unit's deployment to Iraq and their efforts to support the scheme of maneuver and General William Wallace's other priorities through both combat engineering and construction missions. As part of V Corps, the 130th Engineer Brigade supported ground operations by attaching various engineer battalions to the combat units as they made their advance towards Baghdad. Following major combat operations, the brigade transitioned to stability and reconstruction operations to help facilitate the stabilization of Iraq's infrastructure. Balisky offers his perspective concerning these operations, the challenges his unit faced in accomplishing their mission and also the diverse array of skill sets engineers brought to the fight. Indeed, he noted, one should never "let rank get in the way of skill sets. There are guys who know how to do things who are buried deep in a battalion somewhere," Balisky said, "they just need to be sought out."

During his yearlong deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Major Kevin Broadnax served as commander of Alpha Company, 3rd Battalion, 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment, part of the 82nd Airborne Division. In this interview, he discusses his company's predeployment training, a variety of weapons, vehicle, equipment and other logistics issues, and then moves into their entering of Iraq in late March 2003 and their first mission of securing crossing points across the Euphrates River. The company then was sent to As Samawah where they found what turned out to be a training ground for Fedayeen forces. Discussing their efforts to secure that objective, Broadnax relates a key decision he made upon taking incoming enemy mortar fire. "Were we were going to continue the assault forward in broad daylight across about 1,000 meters of open area, or do I hold up and wait until I can set the conditions to be successful as far as attacking the objective? I made the call. I was concerned about various factors, but I made the call to hold up and attack the position once it was night." He also talks about the combat multipliers he received for this and other missions, as well as the leadership lessons he learned. "Especially when that mortar round landed about 10 feet from me, I knew I needed to empower my subordinates so that in the event that something happens to me, they have an idea of what my thought process is and how we can survive. You need to analyze the enemy and you need to figure out what they are doing." Broadnax also relates what he considered his greatest challenge - namely team building - and his company's greatest accomplishment, which he considers to be setting the conditions "for the battalion as a whole to be successful." Property accountability was another challenge, as was reintegrating himself back into family life once he redeployed.

Sam Peckinpah

Sam Peckinpah (1925-1984), an accomplished writer and director of television westerns, did not attract media attention until the release of his second feature-length film, the award-winning Ride the High Country. Peckinpah revealed in early interviews his deep knowledge of film history, an uncompromising aesthetic, and an intolerance for any crew members who did not share his capacity for hard work. As his career progressed, he began having increasingly difficult times with producers who did not share his vision. His problems with them emerge as a major focus of his interviews. Sam Peckinpah: Interviewsfeatures the combustible director discussing his best-known films, including the gory western The Wild Bunch, the unsettling and controversial Straw Dogs(which Pauline Kael described as "the first American film that is a fascist work of art"), and the crime thriller The Getaway. In these conversations, Peckinpah's candor--about himself, filmmaking, studios, male/female relations, violence, and contemporary politics--provides a thoughtful portrait of a polarizing filmmaker. Kevin J. Hayes is professor of English at the University of Central Oklahoma. His previous books include Poe and the Printed Word, Folklore and Book Culture, and An American Cycling Odyssey, 1887, among others. He edited Charlie Chaplin: Interviews and Conversationswith Jack Kerouac, both from University Press of Mississippi.
