In modern society, we have professionalized our care for the dying and deceased in hospitals and hospices, churches and funeral homes, cemeteries and mausoleums to aid dazed and disoriented mourners. But these formal institutions can be alienating and cold, leaving people craving a more humane mourning and burial process. The burial treatment itself has come to be seen as wasteful and harmful—marked by chemicals, plush caskets, and manicured greens. Today’s bereaved are therefore increasingly turning away from the old ways of death and searching for a more personalized, environmentally responsible, and ethical means of grief. Is the Cemetery Dead? gets to the heart of the tragedy of death, chronicling how Americans are inventing new or adapting old traditions, burial places, and memorials. In illustrative prose, David Charles Sloane shows how people are taking control of their grief by bringing their relatives home to die, interring them in natural burial grounds, mourning them online, or memorializing them streetside with a shrine, ghost bike, or RIP mural. Today’s mourners are increasingly breaking free of conventions to better embrace the person they want to remember. As Sloane shows, these changes threaten the future of the cemetery, causing cemeteries to seek to become more responsive institutions. A trained historian, Sloane is also descendent from multiple generations of cemetery managers and he grew up in Syracuse’s Oakwood Cemetery. Enriched by these experiences, as well as his personal struggles with overwhelming grief, Sloane presents a remarkable and accessible tour of our new American way of death.

Johnny was Gravendale's grave digger and embalmer who loved his job, especially picking a special spot that he thought the deceased would be proud to be buried at. Johnny was a little weird because during the embalming process, he would sit beside the cold slab the body was lying on, and as he was inserting the hose into the deceased body to drain their blood, he would read stories to them and talk to them as though they were still alive. After all the visiting relatives of the deceased were gone and Johnny locked the cemetery gate, he would go inside his trailer that he lived in at the cemetery, get his lantern and a book and sit down by a grave of a recent deceased person and read stories to them. Johnny thought the dead person could hear what he was saying more clearly by not burying their casket so deep, but Johnny was unaware that he was in for a big surprise for not burying the dead at the right depth. Johnny took such good care of the dead he would make sure they were dressed properly for their burial and polish the casket. Johnny would even pose in pictures with the deceased to put in his photo album. Sometimes Johnny would even dig up the bodies and sit them up in their casket and talk to them about the stories he read to them. Johnny didn't realize he was playing with fire for disturbing their final resting place. Cemetery of the Living Dead written by Drac Von Stoller will be made into a Short Film in February 2015 and will be seen during the Halloween season in 2015.

How to Read a Graveyard

Death is the one certainty in life, yet, with the decline of religion in the West, we have become collectively reluctant to talk about it. Our contemporary rituals seek to sanitise death and distance us from our own inevitable fate. If we want to know how previous generations dealt with death, graveyards (famous and not) tell us the history -- if we are able to read them. If we want to know how we struggle today with understanding or facing up to death, then graveyards provide a starting point. And, if we want to escape the present taboo on acknowledging our mortality and contemplate our own end, then graveyards offer a rare welcome. From Neolithic mounds to internet memorials via medieval corpse roads and municipal cemeteries, war graves and holocaust memorials, Roman catacombs, Pharaonic grave-robbers, Hammer horrors, body-snatchers, Days of the Dead, humanist burials and flameless cremations, Stanford shows us how to read a graveyard, what to look out for in our own, and how even the most initially unpromising exploration can enthral. This enhanced edition includes suggestions of over 40 graveyards and cemeteries to visit in the UK and beyond, a photographic tour of Saint Margaret's Cemetery, Burnham Norton and an audio tour by the author of Paddington Old Cemetery, London.

Dead Spaces Inside the Cemetery Cities of the Philippines

Shot in February 2018 in Manila and Cebu, this photo essay explores the changing fortunes and shifting patterns of usage of Chinese and Catholic cemeteries in the Philippines. It begins with a portrayal of the fading glory of ethnic Chinese mausoleums in Metro Manila. Shots of beautifully maintained tombs are followed by images of similar structures showing progressive degrees of decay and distress. Economic and demographic trends have contributed to the deterioration of these sprawling necropolises. Population growth and migration from rural areas have created huge pressures on urban infrastructure in large towns and poorer families have also been displaced from make-shift shanty towns by development and regeneration projects. With nowhere else to go, many have moved into (and effectively taken over) a number of the larger cemeteries. Chinese and Catholic cemeteries in Carreta, Cebu are prime examples. The second half of the book examines aspects of this unusual coexistence of the living and the dead in these funerary spaces. Whole families live in tombs and mausoleums, cheek by jowl with the dead, often sleeping on the marble slabs that cover interred bodies. Goats, ducks, chickens, fighting cocks and numerous dogs and cats add to this eclectic mix. Children are born and families live out their lives in what have become surrogate mini cities housing this bizarre combination of the living and the dead. While certainly not looking to make light of the difficulties faced by families living and raising children in such an environment, these images provide evidence of the remarkable way in which people can adapt to cope with their surroundings, however difficult.
