In dieser Hausarbeit soll ein Übersetzungsvergleich des vorletzten Kapitels aus Charles Dickens 1837 erschienenem Roman Oliver Twist stattfinden. In diesem Kapitel werden die Verurteilung sowie die letzten Nächte des Verbrechers Fagin vor seiner Hinrichtung beschrieben. Um eine Grundlage für den Übersetzungsvergleich zu schaffen, wird zunächst die Figur des Juden Fagin charakterisiert. Des Weiteren werden die Techniken und Stilmittel des Autors, die dieser für die Figurenzeichnung Fagins verwendet, näher betrachtet. Im anschließenden Übersetzungsvergleich wird zunächst die Methodik vorgestellt, nach der vorgegangen werden soll. Dann werden zwei für das Kapitel wichtige Textstellen nach dieser Methode untersucht, wobei Abweichungen von Original und Zieltext in jeweils einer Übersetzung herausgearbeitet werden. Von der Vielzahl der existierenden Twist-Übersetzungen werden in diesem Übersetzungsvergleich lediglich zwei berücksichtigt. Es handelt sich dabei um die 1844 erschienene Übersetzung des österreichischen Komödiendichters Eduard von Bauernfeld und um die 1914 erschienene Übersetzung des Schriftstellers Gustav Meyrink. Bei der Auswahl der Übersetzungen wurde darauf geachtet, daß sie bezüglich ihrer übersetzerischen Konzepte zwei gegenläufige Ansichten vertreten. Nach der Darstellung dieser unterschiedlichen übersetzerischen Standpunkte sollen abschließend die beiden Übersetzungen auf ihre Vor- und Nachteile insbesondere hinsichtlich ihrer Wirkung auf den Leser untersucht werden.
