The dangers and drawbacks inherent in radioactivity-based methods along with a demonstrated and dramatic increase in sensitivity have precipitated a major shift towards luminescence measurements and visualization techniques. Their use has now spread even to traditional clinical environments, and their applications have grown from clinical assays to DNA sequencing, antioxidant detection, and high-throughput screening. Luminescence Biotechnology: Instruments and Applications furnishes a thorough w review of the principles and applications of luminescence. With a consistent focus on practical considerations, contributions from a team of internationally acclaimed authors take you from the fundamentals of the different luminescence-based assay systems, calculation methods, and instruments through the spectrum of applications and latest research advances. Topics include gene and protein assays, oxidative stress and tissue aging, applications of luminescent microspheres, and proton image analysis. This book clearly identifies the advantages of luminescence over other assay techniques, discusses its potential pitfalls, and illustrates the broad range of its utility. Whether you are a newcomer to the field or a seasoned professional, this book provides a wealth of information that will bring you quickly up to date on the technology, recent research developments, and cutting-edge applications.

Lately, there has been a growing interest in exploiting the benefits of the ICs for areas outside of the traditional application spaces. One noteable area is found in biology Bioanalytical instruments have been miniaturized on ICs to study various biophenomena or to actuate biosystems. These biolab-on-IC systems utilize the IC to facilitate faster, repeatable, and standardized biological experiments at low cost with a small volume of biological sample. The research activities in this field are expected to enjoy substantial growth in the foreseeable future. BioCMOS Technologies reviews these exciting recent efforts in joining CMOS technology with biology.

The NATO Advanced Study Institute "Biomedical Optical Instrumentation and Laser Assisted Biotechnology" was held November 10-22, 1995 in Erice, Sicily. This was the 19 th conference organized by the International School of Quantum Electronics, under the auspices of the "Ettore Majorana" Center for Scientific Culture. The contributions presented at the Institute are written as extended, review-like papers to provide a broad and representative coverage of the fields of laser techniques, optoelectronics systems for medical diagnosis, and light and laser applications to Biology and Medicine. The aim of the Institute was to bring together some of the world's acknowledged scientists and clinicians that belong to different disciplines and consequently do not usually meet, but who have as a common link the use of optoelectronics instrumentation, techniques and procedures. Most of the lecturers attended all the lectures and devoted their spare hours to stimulating discussions. We would like to thank them all for their admirable contributions. The Institute also took advantage of a very active audience; most of the participants were active researchers in the field and contributed with discussions and seminars. Some of these seminars are also included in these Proceedings. The Institute was an important opportunity to discuss latest developments and emerging perspectives on the use of laser sources and optoelectronic techniques for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes.
