Wahlen sind ein elementarer Bestandteil jeder demokratischen Ordnung. Sie sind der zentrale Mechanismus der Machtverteilung. Die Frage, wie die Wähler zu ihrer Entscheidung kommen und was sie beeinflusst, ist daher besonders relevant. Die Wirkung der Medienberichterstattung auf die Wähler wird zwar schon seit dem Aufkommen der Massenmedien untersucht. Dennoch herrscht Unklarheit über deren Wirkungsstärke. Auf der einen Seite wird den Massenmedien nur ein geringes Einflusspotential zugesprochen. Die Effekte der Berichterstattung bestehen danach nur in der Mobilisierung und Verstärkung bereits vorhandener wahlrelevanter Einstellungen. Auf der anderen Seite wird auch die Annahme geäußert, dass die Berichterstattung starke, sogar persuasive Einflüsse aufweisen kann. Dass Studien zu unterschiedlichen Ergebnissen über die Effektstärken kommen, hat verschiedene Gründe. Zum einen hat sich die Gesellschaft und damit auch das Medienangebot in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten massiv verändert. Somit dürften sich auch die Einflussmöglichkeiten im Zeitverlauf gewandelt haben. Zum anderen wurden unterschiedliche theoretische und methodische Herangehensweisen ausprobiert. Inwieweit die politische Medienberichterstattung heutzutage, insbesondere in der Wahlkampfzeit, ihre Rezipienten beeinflusst, ist daher immer noch umstritten. Die vorliegende Studie untersucht in diesem Kontext, ob im Vorfeld der Bundestagswahl 2009 ein Einfluss durch die politische Fernsehberichterstattung bei den Wählern beobachtet werden konnte.
