Why, and how, are some people -- women, blacks, and other minorities -- discriminated against? The answers to these questions are important because an understanding of the causes and operation of discrimination is essential to finding effective ways to counteract and eradicate discrimination from our society. While the popular view holds that prejudice and bigotry lie behind racist and sexist discrimination, this book goes beyond that view to expose other roots of the problem that are more subtle and difficult to combat. The authors describe in detail the mechanics and effects of institutionalized discrimination in employment, housing, health and social services, education, politics, and the courts.

The Law in the Information and Risk Society

"The information and risk society poses a new challenge for the law in all its fragments. Modern media communication and technologies increase people's prosperity while stating new risks with not uncommonly devastating crisis-potential: The banking crisis, the safety net for the euro zone and the nuclear incident in Fukushima are only the latest forms of those specific modern common dangers which the law is facing - in many cases due to it's domestically limited validity - not or not sufficiently prepared. In order to promote the international dialog within the jurisprudence there was a conference in October 2010 held by the faculty of law of the Georg-August-Universität, supported by the chair of GAU, together with the faculty of Seoul National University School of Law discussing main issues of law in a modern information and risk society. With this volume the results of this convention shall be made accessible to everybody interested. Thereby it illustrates not only the variety of new issues and aspects, but also reveals that this can only be the beginning on the way to a deeper understanding of the complex correlations. Volume 10 in the series "Göttinger Juristische Schriften" The series is published by the Faculty of Law of the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen und makes events at the faculty publicly available."--Publisher's description.

This edited volume discusses UNESCO's contributions to inclusive education over the past 20 years, the normative and technical leadership roles this organization has been playing together with its peers and competitors in educational development, and the current status of this issue in academic debates, as well as conceptualizations from different cultures. The chapters reflect and critically discuss a range of positions on the relation between inclusive education, educatino for all, and special needs education and particularly express the role disability plays in these thematic contexts. The book brings to light that although the term inclusive education is commonly associated with people with disabilities, there are contexts - e.g., research strands on school development in the UK - in which inclusive education is considered as an approach in which the focus of special (needs) education is widened in terms of the target group, reaching out to the heterogeneity of learners, thus taking diversity as a starting point for educational theory and practice. This book highlights the differences in narratives of inclusive education in the United States and abroad and is intended to bridge the various approaches to the study of inclusive education and disability, particularly in the US, the UK, and the Nordic countries within Europe. Although academics and students in Disability Studies are the target audience, the book is also of high relevance to policy makers in the growing field of inclusive education, as well as being potentially interesting for practitioners in education and social work.
