Grundsatzlich kann jeder Ort zu einem ausserschulischen Lernort werden. Ausserschulisches Lernen findet immer dann statt, wenn sich die Schuler ausserhalb des Schulgebaudes oder ausserhalb des schulischen Rahmens mit einem originalen Lerngegenstand unter gezielter padagogischer Anleitung auseinandersetzen" (Sauerborn/Bruhne 2009, S.12). Der Lernort muss aber bewusst geplant in den Unterricht einbezogen werden. Voraussetzung fur einen geeigneten ausserschulischen Lernort ist die originale Begegnung, das unmittelbare Erleben und der handelnde Umgang mit der Umwelt. Im Folgenden soll nun ein konkreter Lernort - der Lernort Bauernhof - herausgegriffen werden, um an diesem Beispiel u.a. zu erlautern, wie ein Unterrichtsgang mit Schulern ablaufen kann. Der Besuch des Lernorts ist in eine Unterrichtseinheit integriert, damit die Schuler nicht unvorbereitet, sondern mit einem gewissen Vorverstandnis den Bauernhof besuchen. Thema der Einheit ist: Woher kommt die Milch? Themeninhalte dieser Unterrichtsreihe sollen sein: die Herkunft der Milch, der Weg der Milch von der Milchkuh bis hin zum Verbraucher, Milch als menschliches Grundnahrungsmittel, der personliche Milchkonsum und Milchprodukte. Zuerst werden Grunde genannt die dafur sprechen, Lernorte ausserhalb des Klassenzimmers zu besuchen.Darauf anschliessend werden speziell Grunde fur den Lernort Bauernhof erortert. Population mobility is at an all-time high in human history.
