Praise for Shared Services A Manager's Journey "In Shared Services: A Manager's Journey, Dan presents the real business cultural challenges along with human factors when taking on such a change in a company's processes. A must-read for any executive, manager, or team member who is considering, decided to, or is already in the process of converting a company from a decentralized organization to a shared services environment." -Katherine M. Ericsson Vice President of Membership, Project Management Institute of South Florida and director of a project management office, in a shared services environment within the distribution industry "A how-to/survival guide for those thinking about entering shared services or beginning the journey...for the rest of us, an entertaining look back at our journey both professionally and personally. A great read!" -Steve K. Stone Senior Vice President and CFO, Newspapers and Shared Services Morris Communications Company "Over the past fifteen years, I've had the pleasure of working directly with hundreds of companies who are implementing shared services. What is striking is how very different 'real experiences' are from the stories spun by consultants or keynote speakers at conferences. Getting to the 'real truth' of how to put the pieces together will help you keep consulting fees low and the probability of success high. This book is a practical guide created by someone who has been there. It is the truth!" -Mike Hostetler Managing Director, Shared Services Roundtable Corporate Executive Board

On December 7, 1941, Pearl Harbor was brutally attacked by Japanese war planes, forever changing the history of the world. Thousands of miles away, Joseph Friedman was living on a small farm in Flemington, New Jersey, handling many chores during the day and discussing the war in the evening. Less than a year later, Friedman's own life would change forever when he joined the Marine Corps and shipped overseas to begin a twenty-seven month journey into wartime. Friedman narrates a compelling and harrowing story as he chronologically describes his experiences as a Marine private during World War II, commencing with his swearing-in ceremony in downtown New York City. As he details rigorous marches during basic training, tenacious patrols through the South Pacific jungles, fierce battles with the enemy, and terror as he huddled in foxholes and witnessed the unleashing of war's fury, Friedman offers a moving portrayal of the powerful human emotions that sustained every soldier comradeship, duty, and loyalty to their fellow brothers-in-arms. In God Shared My Foxholes, Joseph Friedman offers not only his own personal reflections, but also a lasting tribute that acknowledges the indomitable courage and incredible sacrifices of all who served during World War II.

It had been almost a year since Todd and I decided to go our separate ways. It was a mutual decision to break up. We had simply grown apart. We still loved each other very much, but we just couldn't seem to get past the differences that grew between us the last year that we were together. It wasn't an easy decision for either one of us. We did, however, remain friends through the break up. We still talked to each other all the time, and in the first few months after the breakup, I found it hard to talk to him and not ask if he wanted to try and work things out only because I didn't want to be alone. I was learning firsthand what the word lonely really meant. There were a couple of other boyfriends before Todd, but I knew that they weren't going to last. They had simply been someone to hang out with and have fun with, someone to go out to dinner with or a movie. I had no intentions of getting too serious with them, like I had with Todd. I had always thought that Todd was the one for me, my true and everlasting soul mate. He made me feel special, and he didn't obsess over me or what I did. I felt that I could be myself¯a free spirit¯with him. He was soft and loving toward me; he was protective but not overbearing. He made me feel safe. I knew that I didn't have to worry about anyone hurting me. Todd would stand back and let things happen till he sees that I needed his help. Then he would step in and take over. No one messed with me while I was with Todd.

This Is Parenting on Your Own Terms Chances are, you'd rather not forfeit your happy, rested life the moment you become a parent. As a mom, you may want to keep your career, but aren't sure how to balance it with housework and childcare. As a dad, you probably want to witness your child's milestones, but a demanding job may get in the way. And what about time for yourself (never mind your sex life)? Marc and Amy Vachon were determined to beat this scenario when their first child was born. They vowed to sidestep the world's expectations of new parents and create a parenthood model that worked for them. Their strategy was to share everything-the good and the bad. They became peers in each area of parenthood: childcare, housework, and breadwinning. They also made time for themselves, and for each other. They shared the burdens so nobody was overwhelmed, and the joys so neither missed out on the fun. Drawing on Marc and Amy's experiences, as well as those of dozens of ESP couples, Equally Shared Parenting shows you how to create a balanced life that is rarely experienced by today's parents. It's not just about who vacuums and who does the dishes, or who brings in the paycheck and who tends to the kids. You'll learn how to look at every aspect of parenthood, money, careers, and your individual needs, so you can build a life that works for you both.
