To Richard Sibbes the Gospel was truly good news, and he "sought to allure us to ... Christ's mild, safe, wise, victorious government." He does just this in "The Bruised Reed," his best known work. Frequently called "the heavenly Sibbes," Sibbes was admired both for his preaching and his godly life. Izaac Walton, author of the Compleat Angler, wrote of Sibbes: Of this blest man, let this just praise be given, Heaven was in him, before he was in heaven. This edition also includes "A Description of Christ," an exposition of Matt 12:18.

The Pastor as Public Theologian

Many pastors today see themselves primarily as counselors, leaders, and motivators. Yet this often comes at the expense of the fundamental reality of the pastorate as a theological office. The most important role is to be a theologian mediating God to the people. The church needs pastors who can contextualize the Word of God to help their congregations think theologically about all aspects of their lives, such as work, end-of-life decisions, political involvement, and entertainment choices. Drawing on the Bible, key figures from church history, and Christian theology, this book offers a clarion call for pastors to serve as public theologians in their congregations and communities. It is designed to be engaging reading for busy pastors and includes pastoral reflections on the theological task from twelve working pastors, including Kevin DeYoung and Cornelius Plantinga.

In our ongoing battle against sin in our life as believers, we need all the help we can get. Spiritual Formation: Ever Forming, Never Formed is a breath of fresh air in this fight, setting out biblical foundations and offering practical advice. Spiritual Formation both humbles triumphalistic Christians and gives much needed hope to defeated Christians. Simplistic evangelicals often think of sin as a problem for unbelievers, and yet reality clearly points to the looming presence of indwelling sin in the life of the Christian and its deadly impact on the church. By not fully admitting and openly addressing chronic sin problems, believers deceive themselves and the world that looks on, doing harm to all through this hypocrisy. Spiritual Formation is a scalpel to cut away tumors of ignorance, avoidance, and pride, creating honest believers who then will be an authentic witness to a hurting world.

Richard Sibbes (1577–1635) was an English pastor and theologian. A leading Puritan, he influenced George Herbert, John Wesley and Charles Spurgeon. In his book Preachers and Preaching, Martyn Lloyd-Jones noted, "I shall never cease to be grateful to Richard Sibbes, who was balm to my soul at a period in my life when I was overworked and badly overtired, and therefore subject in an unusual manner to the onslaughts of the devil.... I found at that time that Richard Sibbes... was an unfailing remedy. His books The Bruised Reed and The Soul's Conflict quietened, soothed, comforted, encouraged, and healed me." In this book, Sibbes reflects on Psalm 42:11 — "Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God; for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God."
