Oneida is an endangered Iroquoian language spoken fluently by fewer than 250 people. This is the first comprehensive dictionary of the Oneida language as used in Ontario, where most of the surviving speakers reside. The dictionary contains both Oneida-English and English-Oneida sections. The Oneida-English portion includes some 6000 entries, presenting lexical bases, particles and grammatical morphemes. Each entry for a base shows several forms; illustrates inflection, meaning and use; and gives details regarding pronunciation and cultural significance. The English-Oneida entries direct the reader to the relevant base in the Oneida-English section, where technical information is provided. Completing the volume is a set of appendices that organizes Oneida words into thematic categories. The Iroquoian languages have an unusually complex word structure, in which lexical bases are surrounded by layers of prefixes and suffixes. This dictionary presents and explains that structure in the clearest possible terms. A work of enormous precision and care, it incorporates many innovative ideas and shows a deep understanding of the nature of the Oneida language.

• Winner of the BC National Award for Non-Fiction • Nominated for the Charles Taylor Prize for Literary Non-Fiction and the 2011 Hilary Weston Writer's Trust Award. During Charlotte Gill’s 20 years working as a tree planter she encountered hundreds of clear-cuts, each one a collision site between human civilization and the natural world, a complicated landscape presenting geographic evidence of our appetites. Charged with sowing the new forest in these clear-cuts, tree planters are a tribe caught between the stumps and the virgin timber, between environmentalists and loggers. In Eating Dirt, Gill offers up a slice of tree-planting life in all of its soggy, gritty exuberance while questioning the ability of conifer plantations to replace original forests, which evolved over millennia into intricate, complex ecosystems. Among other topics, she also touches on the boom-and-bust history of logging and the versatility of wood, from which we have devised countless creations as diverse as textiles and airplane parts. She also eloquently evokes the wonder of trees, our slowest-growing “renewable” resource and joyously celebrates the priceless value of forests and the ancient, ever-changing relationship between humans and trees.

These papers, from three sessions organised by the EAA between 1999 and 2001 or from the XIVth Congress of the UPSPP in 2001, have been gathered together as an anecdote to Anglo-American theoretical approaches to archaeology. Their aim is to bring methodology back to the fore, to test the solidity of the data collected from the field before it is manipulated by the `ivory towers' of theory. The 39 papers, which include detailed analyses as well as brief abstracts, are divided into ten sections: defining the problem; the state of the art; theoretical perspectives; single context planning and the MoLAS system; exporting single context planning; critical perspectives; recording stratigraphy; a question of scale; startigraphy and geoarchaeology; looking to the future. Excavation methodologies are examined from across the world and cover sites from all periods including Iron Age Estonia, Russian peat sites, Newgate Street Prison in London, Irish burnt mounds, German and POlish archaeology, Swedish urban archaeology, Palaeolithic France and Alaska.
