William W. Johnstone's vivid, uncompromising novels stand as violent portraits of the rugged American frontiersman and the forces that forged him. In this powerful novel, Johnstone tells the story of a young Missourian forced by fate and violence into lawlessness--where he sees a chance to right the wrong that shattered his family and his soul. . . Smoke Jensen is a young man raised on loss and bitterness, nurtured by a mountain man named Preacher. Now, Smoke Jensen, with his, a new black horse and an old grudge, slips over the unmarked border into the turbulent Idaho Territory. Ahead is a town called Bury, built on stolen gold, and run by a band of ruthless men who had a hand in the murder of Smoke's brother in the Civil War. Smoke's father died in pursuit of those killers, but urged his son not to waste his life in vengeance. . . Swift, powerful and poetic, Return Of The Mountain Man is an action-packed tale by William W. Johnstone, an American master--and a great chronicler of our harsh and often unforgiving last frontier. Return of the Mountain Man "What do you mean, I can't come in?" Buck said, standing on the front porch of the Pink House.

My writing style is like a wheel. I begin with the hub then branch out into other tales; however, before it all ends, I bring it back so that it all makes sense. Im able to describe a murder as well as sex without resorting to explicit detail like so much found in todays fiction. By the proper use of language, I accomplish the same emotional response from my readers. The reader often finds interesting essays that digress from or adds to the main plot. They might include slices of local history or an explanation why certain things appear as they do. My stories are told with the reader in mind. The plots are fast moving and contain enough surprises to hold the readers attention. The Tennessee Mountain Man is my third book. It takes a popular character from the first bio novel, Renos Funmakers, and gives his exploits after five years of marriage. The year is 1861, and the trouble down at Fort Sumter, in South Carolina, not only changes the United States but Jack Leffingwell and his family. Along with the main plot, my books never fail to offer the reader information that was previously unknown, making it a learning experience.

Born during the American Revolution, Williams was a child of the early frontier. In his young manhood he became an itinerant preacher and appointed himself a missionary to the Osages, who soon converted him to their lifeway. The Osage girl he married died after bearing his two daughters. From this point on, Old Bill forsook civilization and made the wilderness his home. He was a master trapper and so identified himself in signing his name. He was one of the guides of the Sibley survey of the Santa Fe Trail in 1825 and some twenty years later was a guide with two different Fremont expeditions.

Robert Campbell (1804-1879) came to America from Ireland in 1822 and entered the fur trade soon thereafter. He quickly rose from trapper to brigade leader to partner, all within a half dozen years. In the mid-1830s, Campbell retired from the mountains, having already amassed considerable wealth, and embarked on a new career. He returned to St. Louis and built up a business empire that embraced mercantile, steamboat, railroad, and banking interests. Through these ventures he not only gained more wealth but also became a leading force behind the development of the region's economy. Exploring the enormous treasure trove of letters, journals, and account books that Campbell left behind, William Nester places Campbell in the context of the times in which he lived, showing the economic, political, social, and cultural forces that provided the opportunities and challenges that shaped his life.
