Offering a fascinating account of the development of women police over the past twenty years, this book refers to the author's extended research in India to examine how the Indian experience demonstrates a valuable alternative to the Anglo-American model; not only for traditional societies but for women police in the West as well. With reference to the establishment in 1992 of all-women units in Tamil Nadu, this unique experiment proved highly successful in enhancing the confidence and professionalism of women officers and ensuring the effectiveness and efficiency of the police. At a time when policing is being rethought all over the world, not only in traditional societies, the Tamil Nadu practice illustrates important lessons for western countries that are finding it increasingly difficult to recruit and retain women officers. Natarajan's remarkable book is an important and original contribution to the literature on gendered policing, which to date has concentrated almost exclusively on the US and British experience.

Economy is embedded in ongoing concrete social networks, and economic processes are increasingly international in character. Three interrelated processes are crucial for setting the frame of analysis for this book: globalisation, development of post-industrial societies, and transformation of European post-socialist countries. Within this framework the main issues are as follows: (1) Economies in transition: reliable patterns, imitation, local adaptation, cultural embeddedness; (2) Multiplicity of markets: commodification of life, new markets in old societies; (3) Economic behavior: households, micro-enterprises, local and global influences; (4) Contemporary polities, i.e. states, the European Union and global corporations. The stress will be placed on actors, relations and institutions as the driving forces of the above described processes. The authors of this collection, based on their empirical material, analyze very interesting socio-economic issues. These are: ethical consumption from the perspective of the moral economy and its connection to political institutions in Europe (and particularly in Hungary); the cultural context of consumption, both in the case of social networks in Bangladesh and of counterfeited goods on the Russian market; the new and old, individual and organizational actors in transition economies, for instance in Poland and Croatia; the new approach to corporations as global actors, stressing their social responsibility; the dynamics of managerial practices in the example of Russia; the influence of EU funds and policies on the Polish SMEs market; the cultural embeddedness of economic behavior, in the case of Poles working in the Scottish market and of entrepreneurs in Damascus; the retirement policy in the fast aging societies of Spain and Poland; and the emergence of the new markets, like that of health services, in Russia and that of the property market in Eastern and Central Europe.

DO YOU NEED A LIFE COACH? U.S. President Thomas Jefferson did--he called Jesus' teaching: The most sublime Code of Morals ever offered to Man.Ó This dynamic book echoes Jefferson's sentiment, and coaches its readers by examining fifty core sayings of Jesus, authenticated by the scholars of the Jesus Seminar. This selection reveals the forceful theme of his original teaching. Each saying is carefully considered and then arranged in a unique order to clarify his positive challenge. In every age, followers have followed Jesus' coaching, working for the Good Society which, he asserted, is created by God's loving will. His grassroots approach to personal and social reform is compared with the failed social and political philosophies of our day. The author, Peter Watson Jenkins, has thoughtfully picked the fruits of modern scholarship, making them available for all to ponder, enjoy, and adopt, as Jesus' authentic coaching. He explains how his life as a student changed when, after reading Jesus' authentic message for himself, he chose Jesus as the coachÓ for his lifelong marathon. Training for the Marathon of Life is not just a Bible study; it's a call to action--an invitation for us all to play our part in creating the Good Society. This engaging book is designed both for people who have never committed themselves to the church view of Jesus, and also for those who have gladly done so. It will encourage debate by young and old, and inspire great, action-packed sermons, too!
