In today’s schools, it is imperative that school-based mental health professionals be adequately trained in the knowledge and impact of pediatric health disorders on children’s academic, social, and emotional progress and performance. This book will provide practitioners and researchers with the most relevant and up-to-date information concerning conceptual models and applications of intervention and prevention strategies in pediatric school psychology. Rather than making specific disorders the book’s primary focus, the authors discuss practical topics such as improving adherence, promoting successful school reintegration, reducing stress and enhancing coping skills, improving pain management, and enhancing quality of life. Prevention strategies covered include developing multi-tiered programs, monitoring program effectiveness and quality of implementation, and programming for sustainability. A unique feature of this book is its emphasis on developing leaders in pediatric school psychology, with chapters devoted to important topics including program development and evaluation, grant writing, and manuscript reviewing and preparation. An accompanying CD contains PowerPoint presentations and guidelines for practice to assist with lectures and describes strategies for application in clinical and school settings.

The vast majority of care provided to adults and elders with chronic illness is given in the home, most often by family members. The caregiver's role is daunting; caregiving is often referred to as a 'career,' requiring long hours and arduous tasks. Primary caregivers show higher rates of morbidity and mortality, and caregiving is a major source of stress and burden to caregiving families. Presently, very little support is available to caregivers from either State or Federal agencies. However, awareness of this worsening problem is growing among health professionals and policy makers. The Spectrum of Family Caregiving for Adults and Elders with Chronic Illness is written for individuals in the helping professions who are in roles that interface with or serve family caregivers who are supporting an adult or elder with a chronic condition. The volume includes eight disease-specific chapters written by experts from various disciplines. Each discusses the caregiving role and includes a thorough review of the literature on the characteristics of caregivers and care-recipients, including related care needs, issues, and challenges unique to that chronic illness. Chapters also review the extant literature on caregiver interventions. An Evidence Table is included in each of these chapters so that the reader can easily judge the quality of evidence supporting the intervention studies. Finally, each chapter includes two case studies describing common problems encountered by caregivers, along with descriptions of interventions used to address these problems. The final chapter summarizes the state of the science on caregiving roles and caregiver interventions and discusses the most relevant challenges and barriers faced by today's caregivers and caregiver advocates. This book will be valuable to clinicians and those in the helping professions, as well as academics and researchers with an interest in the study of family caregiving and caregiver interventions, and to health administrators, public officials, and policy makers concerned with chronic illness care and management.

Integrated care is arguably one of the most important developments in the delivery of health care over the last few years. This new approach to health care, roughly defined as the provision of behavioral or mental health care in a way that is more coordinated with the primary medical healthcare setting, has the focused goal of providing a more complete care for the patient. This book focuses on three main content areas. Firstly, the treatment of psychological problems in the context of primary medical care will be addressed in several chapters. Secondly, several chapters address co-morbid psychological factors that play a key role in the effective medical management of physical diseases, either acute or chronic. Finally, several chapters address issues relevant to the overall practice of integrated care. This book is intended to extend and bridge the existing literatures of integrated care, behavioral medicine, consultation-liaison psychiatry, medical cost offset, and healthcare economics, by providing a comprehensive and current handbook of the clinical protocols that might be applied to the practice of integrated care.
