This volume contains the Proceedings of the Second International Workshop on Unsaturated Soils, which was held in Anacapri, Italy, from 23 to 25 June 2004. This meeting was organized by the Department of Geotechnical Engineering of the University of Naples Federico II and the Department of Mechanical and Structural Engineering of the University of Trento, under the auspices of the Technical Committee on Unsaturated Soils (TC6) of the ISSMGE and the Associazione Geotecnica Italiana (AGI). In line with the spirit of the first workshop in 2000, post-graduate and post-doctoral researchers from different universities were invited to present their work. This book contains peer-reviewed papers on unsaturated soils, particularly new developments in laboratory testing, experimental data on compacted and natural soils and constitutive and numerical modelling of unsaturated soil behaviour.

Unsaturated Soils: Advances in Geo-Engineering comprises 136 contributions from leading international researchers and practitioners, presented at the First European Conference on Unsaturated Soils (Durham, UK, 2-4 July 2008). The papers report on the latest advances in geo-engineering aspects of unsaturated soils. It is the first collection to focus on research developments within Europe, where a resurgence of interest in unsaturated soil behaviour has lead to major advances. The volume is divided into five sections: - Advances in testing techniques, - Engineering behaviour, -Constitutive modelling, - Numerical modelling, -Case histories. The areas of application include slope stability, foundations, dams, contaminated land, landfill and nuclear waste repositories. The section on advances in testing techniques includes recent developments in high capacity tensiometers, spatial Time Domain Reflectometry and Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy. The section on engineering behaviour includes the latest findings concerning factors affecting the water retention surface; volume change of soils during wetting and drying; peak, ultimate and residual strength of soils; small strain modulii and shear wave responses. The sections on Constitutive and Numerical modelling address major developments in coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical elasto-plastic models. Unsaturated Soils: Advances in Geo-Engineering contains 90 papers from 15 countries within Europe with a further 46 contributions from 15 other countries, and is a comprehensive collection that will be essential referencematerial for geo-engineers around the world.

These volumes contain the contributions to the Second European Conference on Unsaturated Soils, E-UNSAT 2012, held in Napoli, Italy, in June 2012. The event is the second of a series of European conferences, and follows the first successful one, organised in Durham, UK, in 2008. The conference series is supported by Technical Committee 106 of the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering on Unsaturated Soils. The published contributions were selected after a careful peer-review process. A collection of more than one hundred papers is included, addressing the three thematic areas experimental, including advances in testing techniques and soil behaviour, modelling, covering theoretical and constitutive issues together with numerical and physical modelling, and engineering, focusing on approaches, case histories and geo-environmental themes. The areas of application of the papers embrace most of the geotechnical problems related to unsaturated soils. Increasing interest in geo-environmental problems, including chemical coupling, marks new perspectives in unsaturated soil mechanics. This book will provide a valuable up-to-date reference across the subject for both researchers and practitioners.

In this spirit, the ATMSS International Workshop “Advances in Laboratory Testing & Modelling of Soils and Shales” (Villars-sur-Ollon, Switzerland; 18-20 January 2017) has been organized to promote the exchange of ideas, experience and state of the art among major experts active in the field of experimental testing and modelling of soils and shales. The Workshop has been organized under the auspices of the Technical Committees TC-101 “Laboratory Testing”, TC-106 “Unsaturated Soils” and TC-308 “Energy Geotechnics” of the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering. This volume contains the invited keynote and feature lectures, as well as the papers that have been presented at the Workshop. The topics of the lectures and papers cover a wide range of theoretical and experimental research, including unsaturated behaviour of soils and shales, multiphysical testing of geomaterials, hydro–mechanical behaviour of shales and stiff clays, the geomechanical behaviour of the Opalinus Clay shale, advanced laboratory testing for site characterization and in–situ applications, and soil – structure interactions.

The definitive guide to unsaturated soil— from theworld's experts on the subject This book builds upon and substantially updates Fredlund andRahardjo's publication, Soil Mechanics for UnsaturatedSoils, the current standard in the field of unsaturated soils. It provides readers with more thorough coverage of the state of theart of unsaturated soil behavior and better reflects the manner inwhich practical unsaturated soil engineering problems are solved.Retaining the fundamental physics of unsaturated soil behaviorpresented in the earlier book, this new publication places greateremphasis on the importance of the "soil-water characteristic curve"in solving practical engineering problems, as well as thequantification of thermal and moisture boundary conditions based onthe use of weather data. Topics covered include: Theory to Practice of Unsaturated Soil Mechanics Nature and Phase Properties of Unsaturated Soil State Variables for Unsaturated Soils Measurement and Estimation of State Variables Soil-Water Characteristic Curves for Unsaturated Soils Ground Surface Moisture Flux Boundary Conditions Theory of Water Flow through Unsaturated Soils Solving Saturated/Unsaturated Water Flow Problems Air Flow through Unsaturated Soils Heat Flow Analysis for Unsaturated Soils Shear Strength of Unsaturated Soils Shear Strength Applications in Plastic and LimitEquilibrium Stress-Deformation Analysis for Unsaturated Soils Solving Stress-Deformation Problems with Unsaturated Soils Compressibility and Pore Pressure Parameters Consolidation and Swelling Processes in Unsaturated Soils Unsaturated Soil Mechanics in Engineering Practice isessential reading for geotechnical engineers, civil engineers, andundergraduate- and graduate-level civil engineering students with afocus on soil mechanics.

In recent decades the development of unsaturated soil mechanics has been remarkable, resulting in momentous advances in fundamental knowledge, testing techniques, computational procedures, prediction methodologies and geotechnical practice. The advances have spanned the full spectrum of theory and practice. In addition, unsaturated materials exhibiting complex behaviour such as residual soils, swelling soils, compacted soils, collapsing soils, tropical soils and solid wastes have been integrated in a common understanding of shared behaviour features. It is also noteworthy that unsaturated soil mechanics has proved surprisingly fruitful in expanding to other neighbouring areas such as swelling rocks, rockfill mechanics, and freezing soils. As a consequence, geotechnical engineering involving unsaturated soils can be now approached from a more rational and systematic perspective leading towards an improved and more effective practice. Unsaturated Soils contains the papers presented at the 5th International Conference on Unsaturated Soil (Barcelona, Spain, 6-8 September 2010). They report significant advances in the areas of unsaturated soil behaviour, testing techniques, constitutive and numerical modelling and applications. The areas of application include soil-atmosphere interaction, foundations, slopes, embankments, pavements, geoenviromental problems and emerging topics. They are complemented by three keynote lectures and three general reports covering general issues of modelling, testing and applications. Unsaturated Soils is a comprehensive record of the state-of-the art in unsaturated soil mechanics and a sound basis for further progress in the future. The two volumes will serve as an essential reference for academics, researchers and practitioners interested in unsaturated soils.
