This single-volume resource offers comprehensive coverage of women directors and their films as well as producers, writers and production artists. General information on the filmmaker or film is followed, where applicable, by more detailed biography, filmography, comprehensive credits, production information, awards and bibliography. The core of the entry consists of a signed, 800- to 1,000-word critical essay written by a film critic or scholar. Following introductory essays on the evolution and status of women filmmakers, 190 alphabetically arranged entries discuss women directors, producers, animators, art directors, editors, writers, and costume designers. Each entry contains a brief biography, a complete filmography, a selected bibliography of works on and by the entrant, and an expository essay by a specialist in the field. The remaining entries (approximately 60) concern films in which women filmmakers have had a major role. They include production information, lists of cast and crew, a selected bibliography of works about the film, and an essay. Contains many b&w portraits and stills.

Quart here extends her previous writings on what she terms `the best narrative cinema: women-centered cinema' and feminist filmmaking. Quart addresses American, Western European, and Eastern European directors, closing with Third World examples. Arguing that independent filmmaking best serves the quest for a woman's voice and vision, Quart chronicles the survival of women directors. She traces a heritage of women directors inside the Hollywood system and beyond. . . . This excellent study . . . [is] recommended for undergraduates in film and women's studies. Choice The current level of activity among women directors is unequalled in the history of feature films. This unprecedented study examines major contemporary women directors of narrative feature film--their themes, their art, and the circumstances under which they work. Quart contends that women are creating a film language and film sensibility that are unique, strong, and--until now--unexplored. Her discussion centers on the ties between women directors, rather than on a survey of women who direct films. Beginning with the antecedents to today's burgeoning number of women directors, the study progresses to American women directors. Subsequent chapters focus on womenn directors in Western Europe and Eastern Europe, with some attention as well to Asia and Latin America.

The book contains exclusive interviews with women film directors, explores the impact of digital technology, and reaches some surprising conclusions. Now that Kathryn Bigelow has made history as the first woman to win an Oscar for directing, we ask whether this is a new era for women filmmakers. This unique international overview highlights emerging women directors and groundbreaking pioneers, and provides a one-stop guide to the leading film directors of the 21st century, and the people who inspired them. From the blockbusters of the Hollywood studios to emerging voices from Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Laos, we learn of women making films in traditionally male-dominated areas such as action, fantasy and horror. There are contributions from countries with film industries in every state from nascent to mature, and this book demonstrates how economic and technological change is creating new opportunities for women film directors everywhere.

This book focuses on the output of women film directors in the period post Millennium when the number of female directors working within the film industry rose substantially. Despite the fact that nationally and internationally women film directors are underrepresented within the industry, there is a wealth of talent currently working in Britain. During the early part of the 2000s, the UKFC instigated policies and strategies for gender equality and since then the British Film Institute has continued to encourage diversity. British Women Directors in the New Millennium therefore examines the production, distribution and exhibition of female directors’ work in light of policy. The book is divided into two sections: part one includes a historical background of women directors working in the twentieth century before discussing the various diversity funding opportunities available since 2000. The second part of the book examines the innovation, creativity and resourcefulness of British female film directors, as well as the considerable variety of films that they produce, selecting specific examples for analysis in the process.
