What happens when an abortion survivor finds her birth mother, who never knew her daughter was alive? Melissa Ohden is fourteen when she learns she is the survivor of a botched abortion. In this intimate memoir she details for the first time her search for her biological parents, and her own journey from anger and shame to faith and empowerment. After a decade-long search Melissa finally locates her birth father and writes to extend forgiveness, only to learn that he has died without answering her burning questions. Melissa becomes a mother herself in the very hospital where she was aborted. This experience transforms her attitude toward women who have had abortions, as does the miscarriage of her only son and the birth of a second daughter with complex health issues. But could anything prepare her for the day she finally meets her birth mother and hears her side of their story? This intensely personal story of love and redemption illumines the powerful bond between mother and child that can overcome all odds.

After the tragic murder of our oldest daughter by her husband, I was compelled to do something to help other victims of domestic violence. I have been forced to be an advocate against a horrible crime that I did not know existed. Not wanting my daughter's death to be in vain, I have had a God-driven force to tell our story and hopefully reach the law enforcement agencies to make them realize how horrible domestic violence is, and that they should take domestic violence calls seriously and as a crime, not just as a disturbance. My hope is to reach other victims and to help all communities understand that we can stop domestic violence if we work together. Shortly after our daughter's death, I realized that if I could tell our story and could get it published, I could help other families from going through the horrible senseless pain that our family has endured. Right away, the title came to me Not in Vain. I was not sure what God wanted me to do with it until I started reading my journal, my notes, and listening to my tape recordings of the events. It was at that time I realized that this man not only murdered our daughter; he almost killed my whole family. After years of separation and pain, our family did survive. Everything changed in May of 2004. Our lives changed forever.

More than just a simple chronology of dates and facts, this touching biography about the author's beloved mother, Kakki, captures both her spirit and her heart and demonstrates how any person is really an extraordinary person. It presents a lively account of a warmly human woman living an ordinary life with its good times and bad times and dealing with whatever life gives her. These remarkable stories span five decades of life shared by mother and daughter. The retelling of the mother/daughter role reversal that occurred after Kakki's manifestation of Alzheimer's is handled with grace and dignity. A woman with both a strong moral compass and firm Christian beliefs, Kakki leaves an incredible legacy for her child. A fluid and natural storyteller, C.D. Collins shares what she has learned about the human heart and its resilience in this unique memoir of a well-loved mother, whose example made a strong case for motherhood being the highest calling of all.
